“Sharks are the most threatened species on the planet. They are also one of the most misunderstood, being widely seen as nothing more than mindless monsters. But the reality is that sharks are intelligent, generally cautious, and extremely non-confrontational. In fact, more people die from coconuts, drowning and insect bites every year than shark bites. In contrast, humans kill 70 to 100 million sharks every year, causing the collapse of fisheries and reef ecosystems around the globe. It’s a shame since sharks are vital to the health of our oceans, functioning as their immune system by picking off the dead, dying, weak, sick, and injured animals to keep diseases from spreading. And healthy oceans are critical to healthy humans: approximately 70% of our oxygen comes from the ocean. I hope this piece inspires you to give sharks a deeper look and provides an opportunity to raise awareness and educate others to the truth about sharks and their importance. Mahalo (thank you) for speaking up for those without a voice and helping us highlight a majestic beauty of our marine life.” - Ocean Ramsey
